Quit Smoking
Articles
When
Tragic Strikes

This is a real life story of an ex-smoker. It might help you make up
your mind about quitting.
Kenny
Roberto, 33,
Deceased
Ken was a true man's man who knows how to enjoy life to the fullest.
From sports to games, there wasn't a thing he didn't like.
Ken started smoking when he
was 14, he thought that it was the only way to look "cool" and
feel like an adult. From then on, he would always have a packet of cigarettes
in his pocket. To quit smoking was never on his mind despite all that grueling
nagging from our parents and his girlfriends. As he grew older his habit
got from worse to worst.
In 1999 December,
Ken complained of sore throat and breathlessness. His
voice started to turn hoarse. He decided to see a Doctor the next day
and was given antibiotics, however the symptoms did not go away. It lingered
and got worse. Ken went for a chest x-ray and that's when we found out
- my brother had lung cancer! And that was just 1 week after he first
seen the Doctor.
Ken
just couldn't believe it! None of us
could! He started on chemotherapy and radiation right away and things were
not going well. He was constantly suffering in pain, vomited after each
treatment. But, believe
it or not, all that suffering did not stop him from lighting up his
cigarette. Ken still couldn't stop smoking!!! Or maybe he just refused
to. Whatever it was, he just didn't stop.
A
month after he started his treatment, Ken could no longer hold on and
finally took his own life. That was not the end still, Ken's death
affected the whole family especially my Mum. It all happened too fast,
just within weeks, we lost a family member. Just like that.
He ended his life because of
lung cancer, but if he had not started smoking at all, then maybe all
this would not have happen at all. Up till this day, my Mum still cries
whenever his name is mentioned. You will often see tears rolling down
her cheeks when she is alone.
Sometimes I hated Ken, I
hated him for bringing the miseries to the family, and I hated him for
being so selfish just to leave us like that. But I also love him and
miss him a lot. There are no words to express how much we loved him and how
much he is missed.
So please everyone, if you
smoke, you must try to quit and keep yourself healthy, so that your
loved ones will not suffer like we did. Although, quitting smoking does
not guarantee that you will not get cancer, but it will at least reduce
your risk of getting it. At least, if you have to go, you'd go with no
regrets. Not like our dear Kenny.
